    vote NO on consolidating power to ONE person.. If you're councilmembers are not careful, the city/town/ county manager will usually turn into a autocracy form of local government, with the mayor and council only used as a vote to get stuff done.

    • @charlesr.wallace5597
      @charlesr.wallace5597 7 лет назад

      Example: you do not want you're city manager to have appointment power on commissions and committees. one person selecting people to process city business? not good.

    • @KirkWestphal
      @KirkWestphal 7 лет назад

      I think if you dig into the data, you will find that council-manager cities are fiscally healthier than strong mayor cities. As one interviewee indicated, the best defense against someone making bad decisions is the ability to remove him/her instantly with a vote of council.

    • @KirkWestphal
      @KirkWestphal 7 лет назад

      In my city, even though the manager hires and fires staff, the mayor has commission nomination duties (with council confirmation). So yes, I would tend to agree that appointments should rest with elected officials.

    Bias. Government, whether city, county, state, or federal a business. They are not corporations who's sole purpose is to make a profit regardless of the negative impact on society. Government, at least in this Democratic Republic, is supposed to be ran by citizens: Teachers, soccer moms, the high school gym coach, farmers, veterans, ex-cons, - people. Just plain regular flawed people. That was the purpose of our Founding Fathers; it was the whole idea. "We the People", not "The Corporation personhood", which does not and will never exist. Government of, by, and for the People put the People First. Government ran like a business with people who possess a corporate mind set do not.

    • @KirkWestphal
      @KirkWestphal 9 лет назад

      Charles Wilson Charles, thank you for taking the time to comment. You make a very good point. The word "business" is something I struggle with. I think we are in agreement that democracy is key: we should be represented by folks who share our values. People who are elected in our towns and cities are obligated to steer the government to do things that reflect these values, or they are voted out of office. But how these priorities get carried out is another task, which is where the professional training comes in. If I wanted more investment in drinking water quality, for example, I'd want someone managing that who is trained in how to do it. The comparison to a corporation is helpful for some, because the structure is similar: corporate boards are composed of people who are elected by folks who are invested in that particular business, and they hire a CEO to oversee the direction of the corporation. (Perhaps thinking of a board of a non-profit is a more helpful comparison-like a city, there is no profit motive.) The mayor in strong mayor communities is effectively the CEO. Just like the members of a non-profit or for-profit corporation would likely not want to hire a CEO or executive director who has no training in managing budgets or staff, similarly I think it should give citizens in strong mayor communities pause if they are seeing candidates running for mayor that have no government experience.

      Thank you for the feedback, Matthew. You're likely aware of the built-in closed captioning, which does a decent job of transcribing the voiceover. I agree that it leaves something to be desired for the other voices. I will definitely keep your input in mind for future projects.

    yes retail and restaurants, mixed with residential. give the market some choice, when it comes to housing. one thing that pisses me off about michigan, is that, aside from ann arbor, and maybe downtown detroit, there are very limited mixed use housing options. we simply dont have that kind of zoning, in municipal agendas. if an epiphany took place, about how much economic activity and efficient use of public resources, stood to be gained from mx, we would enact such policies imminently.

    Thank you Kirk for the labor that went into putting this video together. Healthy government ideas don't replicate and spread just because they are have merit. Good governance must be championed. Often the payoff for such energy is not appreciated in the moment. Keep up the good work!

  • @detroitmetro101

    a downtown must be more than a commercial district, it has to have people living in it as well. those people who simply dont want to live in a suburban ranch, rather in a mixed use building that is indistinguishable from the downtown itself. build more mixed use condos and apartments, hotels, senior living, etc. or rather zone for them on those damn parking lots, and people will come.

  • @KirkWestphal

    the way to have a lively downtown is to have people live there. a downtown is not suppose to be simply a commercial district...

    Congestion and parking.... Seems interesting how we like to give most of our street space up to the least spatially efficient mode of transportation. Active transportation such as walking and cycling is the best way to enjoy a street-scape. Think about it, every minute you sit in a car is a minute you could have been moving.

  • @totoroben

    Great Film - the cooperative work of wide sidewalks, outdoor congregational areas, and peoplewindows are things Austinites all wish Guadalupe Street could accomplish. I was wondering what you thought of other architectural motifs like Lapidus' 'curved facade' or Gehrian forms permeating the grid structure...

  • @milovachan
    @milovachan 15 лет назад

    lol, j4lyfz if you've ever been to a2- they didn't solve problems like congestion and parking. there's costly public parking by 'rebuplic parking' and extremely rare free parking which requires a minimum of 3 blocks of walking. if you are trying to get in or out of the city especially on main street during any sort of slight congestion it's hellish.
